Ex Metropolitian student Interns at Vivienne Westwood

Seeing as we are all at the point where we need to start making decisions as to what we are going to do after college I thought it a good idea to interview an ex student who as recently started an internship with Vivienne Westwood. For some of us and internship might be a alternative option than going to study at university so I thought I would get an insiders perspective.

Ranushka Thalia Nair left The Metropolitan College in July, she had a placement at Middlesex university to study fashion design. After a few weeks Ranushka didn’t feel like University was the right path for her to take so she began applying to various fashion houses, runway Production Company’s, and fashion magazines for internships. She eventually secured a place at Vivienne Westwood as an intern.

Why did you leave university?
Ermm well I gave university a go and I just didn’t feel like I was doing the right thing for me, I felt like I was ready to be industry now, I needed hands on experience in the fashion industry and didn’t want to wait. I want to focus on the styling side and I felt gaining a degree in Fashion design wasn’t going to help me gain the experience I need.

How did you get your internship?
I literally hounded everyone and anyone involved in fashion, you need to be persistant! I send my C.V out to Westwood’s P.A she then forwarded it to the head of the studio and I got a reply saying I start on Monday!!

What has been your highlight so far?
I got to choose all the accessories and shoes for a promotional photo shoot that was held at Ascot, it was very satisfying to know all my choices were selected in the final shoot. I was also given the responsibilty of choosing ten outfits to be sent to Pamela Anderson.

What to you do on a daily basis?
It varies day to day, I work in the archive helping keep all garments in order and help with styling for photo shoots. I also work very closely with Westwood’s P.A.

Have you meet Vivienne yet?
Ahaa Yes, I was waiting for that one! Briefly I had a chat with her whilst I was typing up an interview for her. She's very sweet and laid back.

What do you think of Vivienne Westwood as a brand?
I love what Vivienne as done for fashion she is a pioneer and inspiration and I feel very lucky to have the chance to be working for her.

What have you got planned for the future?
Well I will be an intern at Vivienne Westwood till February fashion week then I start another Internship at Dazed and Confused in March, so I am really looking forward to what the future has to hold.

Would you recommend an Internship?
I would, especially if you want hands on experience in styling and P.R. Internships aren’t for everyone but for me it is turning out to be the right decision. Expect long hours and hard work kids!
